Constructing a good pack basket is a labor intensive and exacting process. Function, durability and esthetics are all important. With the rugged use a basket might get, anything but the best design, materials and construction will compromise its' longevity.

Having made many packs and seen many more, the form I have come to has a moderately flared belly with an even tumble home that flares again to a generous opening. Rims, handle and skids are of shagbark hickory which is split, carved, and bent to fit each individual basket. The basket itself is woven of heavy Black Ash splint. Like all my baskets, these strips are the annual growth layers which I pound and separate from the tree. I shave each strip to a smooth finish, which is then beveled on the edges to make a tight weave. Leather straps are custom fit to each basket with brass hardware.

The two sizes below are standard, but I can alter the dimensions to make a basket that will work best for you.
