my collection of
natural finished baskets
The outer growth of the tree are straight and free of knots. They provide excellent material for the rugged, tightly woven carriers, gathering, and table top baskets that I make.

Though I make many different styles and sizes of baskets, they are all formed by the construction of one of two types of bottom, round or square-rectangular.

A round bottom basket is formed by intersecting the framework strips like the spokes of a wheel. Eight over eight spokes woven together form a "double" bottom. The weaving continues up the sides to form a round basket.

A square or rectangular bottom basket has a plaited bottom, woven to the desired dimensions. From this base, sides are woven, either maintaining corners to form a square or rectangular basket or with curved sides woven to a round or oval at the rim.

I weave all of my baskets by hand eye without using molds or jigs. I like the individual character this process allows each basket to have.
